Make Up Your Own Holiday Together

The calendar is full of all kinds of holidays, with a reason to celebrate for almost every day of the year. It’s fun to insert these fun days into our schedules, to stop for donuts because it’s a donut day, or to hunt for phone booths or fun landmarks. But on March 26, we will have a different kind of holiday. It will be Make Up Your Own Holiday Day!

The possibilities are endless with this special day. It’s a great chance to get creative or to go back and celebrate one of your favorites.

Creativity day

If your children enjoy creating and building things, you could make art or building your theme for the day. You could have one activity or several. Whether it’s drawing, painting, sculpting, designing, or any other kind of creating, your kids will have a blast doing what they enjoy as a special event.

And when you as a parent need a little free time during your art holiday, your kids could enjoy an episode of Art Time at the TreeSchool. They can keep on with their art theme, and you can get a break. Don’t have a My Signing Time subscription? You can watch the first episode for free here or try it out with a 14-day free trial.

Food themed day

There are so many foods and food types, so you can make this day interesting in so many ways. Do your kids have a favorite food? You could have a silly day full of that favorite food. Macaroni and cheese for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Or you could hold another donut day, since everyone loves donut day.

For more variety in your day, you could pick a type of cuisine and use it to guide your meals for that day. If your family loves Mexican food, you could have breakfast burritos or huevos rancheros for breakfast. Then there could be quesadillas for lunch, and we can continue the Mexican food theme for dinner with tacos, enchiladas, or rice bowls. We can do this with any cuisine or even a general theme like sandwiches. Egg based sandwiches for breakfast, standard sandwiches for lunch, and hamburgers for dinner.

And My Signing Time can add some education to your food themed day with the Signing Time Classic episode Time to Eat

Reading day

We know that reading to our kids is so important for their educational development and for our own relationships with them. For this make up your own holiday, you could have a reading day. Make a special library trip and let your kids pick out some fun picture books. Then cuddle up and read together. Add some snacks or treats and make an event out of it. And you don’t have to read for the entire day to have a reading day. You could watch a movie about one of your favorite stories or enjoy the Signing Time Classic episode Story Time.

Movie day

While we know that too much screen time isn’t good for any of us, it’s fun to enjoy a movie day once in a while. And again, this doesn’t mean we have to stare at the screen all day. We could pick a favorite movie and let that one movie be our theme for the day. We can choose a movie, then make food or activities that go along with that movie.

Game day (outdoors or indoors)

make up your own holiday

If you want to have a game day for your make up your own holiday, you could learn the signs for game, play, or fun while you’re at it.

If the weather is nice where you live, you could hold a game day outside. And you could enjoy it together as a family or you could make a party out of it. Set up fun outdoor games like relay races, sack races, or water games. Hang donuts from a string and have an eating contest. Set up a finger painting station. How fun would an outdoor game event be?

Or we could hold an indoor game day. Pull out your favorite board games, set out some snacks, and have a blast together.

No matter what kind of holiday you decide to have on March 26 (or really any day you choose), take this time to have a fun day with your family!
