Music

Numerous studies show the benefits of exposure to music in early childhood.  Musical involvement in young children has been shown to improve brain development in the areas of language and reasoning, spatial intelligence, listening skills, and creative thinking.  Music gives children the opportunity to practice social skills and self-expression.  Music in early childhood development can create greater phonemic awareness and enhance recognition of patterns and sequences—vital pre-requisites for reading.  Children who are involved with music from early on often score better on standardized tests and in all parts of their studies.  Luckily, while there are countless benefits to early musical exposure, generally it is easy to introduce music to young children as they are naturally drawn to music, songs and dance.  For children, singing and moving are natural activities and come easily.  If you are interested in early childhood music or music for preschoolers, Signing Time has a wide variety of music CDs for you to choose from.  When singing and signing along with these CDs, children combine two powerful developmental tools—music and sign language.

One of the great features of Signing Time products is that they incorporate songs as teaching tools.  Learning American Sign Language through music is a simple way to help children remember the signs and want to practice using them over and over again.  All of Signing Time’s DVDs feature original songs written by Rachel Coleman and incorporate newly learned ASL signs with fun lyrics and simple melodies that children love.  All of the songs presented on the DVDs have been combined into music CDs for children that they can listen to and sing and sign with over and over again.  These Music CDs are perfect for car trips or for any time you want to practice your signs together.  Signing Time Vol. 1-3 Music CD incorporates all 11 of the original Signing Time Songs from Volumes 1, 2, and 3.  This CD includes the much loved Silly Pizza Song and The Good.  Signing Time Vol. 4-6 Music CD features 11 new songs including In a House and The Rainbow Song.  Signing Time Vol. 7-9 Music CD presents a dozen new songs from Volumes 7, 8, and 9 DVDs and includes Caterpillar Dreams and The Zoo Train.  Signing Time Vol. 10-12 Music CD includes 14 original songs including Imagination and The Silly Pizza Song II.   Signing Time also offers Music CDs with all of the songs from their Baby Signing Time series.  These baby sign language songs are sure to please with bouncy dance beats, lively lyrics, and soothing lullabies.  Our sign language CDs and music are sure to appeal to any child who enjoys learning signs through the Signing Time DVDs.

When writing songs for the Signing Time Series, Rachel Coleman (co-creator and star of Signing Time) often draws from her own personal experiences.  For this reason, many of Rachel’s songs are appealing to parents as well as children.  The song Caterpillar Dreams was written about Rachel’s daughter Lucy who was born with Spina Bifida and Cerebral Palsy.  The Good is another one of Rachel’s original songs that touches many moms.  Many of the “grown up” songs that have been written by Rachel for Signing Time have been compiled in the CD Shine, a Signing Time favorite.
