After the recent beta release of our new online ASL course, SignIt ASL, we asked Katie’s Comments I just recently purchased sign it for my homeschool foreign language curriculum this year. Speech intelligibility (speech that can be easily understood) is one of the most difficult areas for people with Down syndrome at all ages. Many children have difficulty with the strength, timing, and coordination of muscle movements for speech.” There are so many factors that enter into the picture for speech. According to The National Center for Health Statistics there are approximately 50 million Americans that have some degree of hearing loss. About 2 million are classified as deaf. Approximately 10% of those classified as deaf were born deaf, the other 90% lost their hearing later in life. American Sign Language is the 3rd most used language in the United States.
