One mom’s unusual idea leads to communication breakthrough

Autism Awareness Month: Matthew’s Road to Communication Matthew has autism and speech apraxia. Until he was almost 3 years old, he could not communicate. A therapist gave Matthew a Baby Signing Time video. And it changed his life. He began to initiate communication through signs! Soon after, Matthew’s mom asked herself: If a little bit of sign language is good for my son, what would happen if he were exposed to a lot of it? Each year, the Academy members nominate their peers for this award, and then the final decision is made by popular vote from the entire Academy. Spring Hand-y Craft: Finger Paint Flowers

Materials White construction paper Finger paint – various colors Directions Step 1:  Paint your fingers green. Make grass by pressing your fingers across the bottom of the paper. You may need to repaint your fingers several times to complete this step. Step 2:  Use your finger to paint stems and leaves with green paint. Step 3:  Paint your thumbs and press them to the paper to make flower petals. Step 4:  Paint your whole hand to make a tulip. Step 5:  Wash up! Spring into Learning with “5 Spring Flowers” Counting Game

Rachel & the TreeSchoolers Plants & Flowers DVD features a song called “5 Spring Flowers” that teaches your child how to count from 1-5 forwards and backwards. Download and print the game. Cut out the flower circles. As you sing the first verse, place the flowers on their matching number circles. Take them off one by one as you sing the second verse.
