Autism, Failed Hearing Test, and Communication Breakthrough

We appreciate our Signing Time families and we love hearing YOUR stories. We wanted to share this one with YOU! Happy Signing! Thank you for empowering me to communicate more fully with my babies. We started using Signing Time nine years ago when our oldest was 6-months old. It opened the door for understanding each other. By 18-months our son understood, and was using, over 200 signs. Years later, we came to learn that he is on the autistic spectrum. I think one of the reasons I dismissed the possibility of autism was that communication and language were so important to him. …

Learn ASL- Nice to Meet You!

We have been Signing Time fans since the very beginning. We recently attended my sister-in-law’s wedding. She married a wonderful man whose parents are both profoundly deaf and for whom American Sign Language (ASL) is their primary language. Knowing this, we brushed up on some of our family signs and getting to know you signs. My 6-year-old especially practiced signing “Hi! My name is…”, fingerspelling her name, and “Nice to meet you!” She went up to the groom’s parents at the rehearsal dinner and delighted them by signing to them. I was also able to communicate with them a little …

Signing Turns Your Child’s Brain On

All of our children have normal hearing and don’t have any behavior or physical conditions. But we wanted to communicate early with our babies, and give them the tools to communicate with us.  And it worked! When our first daughter was about 6 months old, we introduced her to the first volume of Baby Signing Time. She loved the show and began signing to us. We also signed multiple things to her.  By the time she was 1 year old, she could sign 50 words. Over the next few months, she learned 100 more! We were so impressed. It really helped …

Signing with Hard of Hearing Children

Hi, my name is Marisa and I’m a momma bear of 4 kiddos, 3 of which are HOH (hard-of-hearing), and wear hearing aids. I have 3 boys and one girl, ages 11, 8, 2 and 9-months. “Signing Time” was one of the first resources I found, over 10 years ago, when my first son was diagnosed with hearing loss. Your videos made a sometimes hard and solemn time more enjoyable and fun. They were a way to connect with my babies when I felt so disconnected from them. I am now almost fluent in sign language and am teaching my …

Hi, Rachel! I just wanted to share that our 6.5 yr old son was dx’d with global dev. delays in infancy. Our older daughter loved your Baby Sigining-Time videos she watched at a sitters so we bought one of our own and so our son watched it pretty much on repeat daily since birth. As he was approaching 18months he still had absolutely nothing that even sounded like a word and no pointing skills, etc. His only communication of what he wanted or needed was our guessing as he grunted or squeaked. He had early intervention and everything. Finally, one …

Signing for Success

Signing Time Testimonial by: Loretta A. Signing Time was key to making my life and my kid’s lives so much better. It gave my kids the ability to communicate long before they could speak. All the moms around me taught the basic baby signs. My kids were signing more of their needs, and I was able to avoid so many tantrums because of a new sign they learned from one of the Signing Time videos. Here was what also happened: My kids spoke long before the other kids their age, and they kept wanting to learn more. From ages 3-7 …

Spelling and Signing: How ASL helps with homework

Our first experience with using the manual alphabet with spelling was when our oldest daughter was in second grade. Her teacher was fluent in ASL and he would use signs in the classroom to enrich his teaching. Each week he would have the students practice their spelling words by using the manual alphabet to decode each one (try it now). Then they would finger spell each word. This was one of our daughter’s favorite homework assignments! When we discovered that our second daughter had a speech problem, we included the use of ASL in her Individual Education Plan (IEP). It …

Priceless Rewards: Beating the Odds with Signing Time

“What could have been a stumbling block became one more chance for Erin to Shine.” Baby Signing Time Kickstarter Backer Diane C. shares her story about the powerful life-long rewards of signing with her daughter, Erin.   “I just have to share how Signing Time continues to touch our lives every day. My daughter has been a life-long member of the Signing Time family. When she had a speech delay because of Down syndrome, Signing Time gave her an age appropriate vocabulary. As her speech ability became stronger, she stopped signing, until she began using longer sentences. Then she used her signs …
