Why Sign With Your Baby?

Why would I want to sign with my baby? Here are just some of the benefits: With just a few basic signs, you can know if Baby is “hungry”, “thirsty”, wants “milk” or “water”, needs to “sleep”, wants “more”, and the list goes on and on. Provides a bonding experience between parents and baby. Improves confidence and self-esteem. Aids in speech development (most baby signers begin to speak earlier than others who do not sign). Cuts down on tantrums because Baby can tell you what he wants. Signing increases mental development. Learning ASL is teaching your family a second language. It …

Autism, Failed Hearing Test, and Communication Breakthrough

We appreciate our Signing Time families and we love hearing YOUR stories. We wanted to share this one with YOU! Happy Signing! Thank you for empowering me to communicate more fully with my babies. We started using Signing Time nine years ago when our oldest was 6-months old. It opened the door for understanding each other. By 18-months our son understood, and was using, over 200 signs. Years later, we came to learn that he is on the autistic spectrum. I think one of the reasons I dismissed the possibility of autism was that communication and language were so important to him. …

Baby Sign Language for Better Communication

Meet Paula Baker, Signing Time Academy Instructor Almost three years ago I found out I was going to be a mother, and naturally, I began to research parenting techniques in hopes of raising a well rounded human. Down I went into the rabbit-hole and quickly discovered that parenting advice is incredibly detailed and varied. However, one piece of advice that remained constant was the need for communication. A child’s desire to be understood is tremendous, almost as important as his/her desire to be loved. Being able to express basic needs, wants, and emotions is so difficult for a non-verbal, and …

Signing Time and Our Journey As a Special Needs Family

by Lisa T. American Sign Language has been an invaluable blessing to my family. Our three-year-old daughter, June, has complex medical needs including a tracheostomy which prevents her from vocalizing. American Sign Language allows June to communicate with us and to acquire a rich, complete language during these vital early years of brain development. Signing Time enabled us to start learning ASL as a family and to share this language with others. When June received a tracheostomy at 2 months old, doctors did not know if or when she would be able to vocalize. At that time, my husband, my …

A Window into His Mind

by Megan McWilliams, Master Signing Time Instructor While on a walk, my 16 month son took interest in an electrical box surrounded by a decorative fence. We were only one house from home, so I was anxious to keep moving. He pointed to and babbled about the box for a while. Since I was unable to convince him to continue walking, I  signed and told him “ELECTRICITY BOX DON’T TOUCH” knowing he had never seen the signs for electricity or box before. He replied by signing back “BED.” The window into his mind was opened up to me through that one …
